Overview
To maintain an active North Carolina real estate license, professionals must complete 8 hours of continuing education each license year (July 1 to June 10). This includes 4 hours of mandatory update courses (General Update or Broker-in-Charge Update) and 4 hours of elective courses. All coursework must be completed by June 10th annually to maintain active license status.
Key Facts
To maintain an active real estate license in North Carolina for 2025, professionals must comply with the following state continuing education (CE) requirements:
- Licensees must complete a total of 8 hours of CE each license year, running from July 1 to June 10 of the following year.
- The 8-hour CE requirement consists of two parts:
- 4-hour Mandatory Update Course: This is either the General Update (GENUP) for most brokers or the Broker-in-Charge Update (BICUP) for those designated as Broker-in-Charge or BIC-eligible. The update course must be completed in a classroom or live-online setting.
- 4-hour Elective Course: Licensees select an approved elective course, which may be taken online or in-person.
- Completion Deadline: All CE coursework must be completed by June 10th each year to maintain active license status. There is a blackout period; no CE courses are available from June 11 to June 30 annually.
- No Carryover: CE credits cannot be carried over to a future license period. All hours must be completed within the same license year.
- Reporting: Education providers report completed CE credits directly to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC) on behalf of the licensee.
Failure to meet the annual CE requirements by the deadline will result in a change of license status to inactive until the requirements are fulfilled.
